For many past years, the Sisters had been involved in religious education and pastoral ministry in various parishes in the Diocese of Jatai.
Currently, our Sisters are no longer in Brazil, but our numerous Brazilian Associates carry on the charism and mission of Franciscan at-one-ment, joy and peace. It is in this way, that the charism of the Franciscan Sisters of the Atonement remains alive and well in Brazil!
In the early 1960’s, Pope John XXIII asked religious congregations to send at least 1/10th of their personnel to Latin America because of the tremendous needs of this continent. In 1963, the Franciscan Sisters of the Atonement arrived in Jataí, Goiás, Brazil.
Sr. Dolores D’Aloia (from Mechanicville, New York) ~ ministered in Brazil for 52 years. Her missionary experiences have been numerous and most inspiring to many. Sister has recently retired and continues her missionary spirit through prayer and sharing her stories of experiences of her mission work and lived experiences.
In celebration of the life and ministry of Sr. Dolores’ ~ a book has been written by Oníria Guimarães de Oliveira, a native to Rio Verde, Goias.
This book documents the remarkable life of Sr. Dolores’ mission and ministry in Brazil as a Franciscan Sister of the Atonement. The book, containing many photographs from Sister’s life, illustrates her dedication and commitment to her Franciscan-Atonement vocation and way of life. Many testimonies and stories of her experiences in Brazil are included in the book. What a wonderful keepsake for all who know Sr. Dolores, and what a wonderful inspiration for all who are “missionaries” ~ in heart, soul or present involvement.
